RuPaul’s MasterClass Review on Self-Expression and Authenticity [2022]

RuPaul opens up, gets real, and teaches you all about authenticity in his MasterClass on self-expression and authenticity. You’ll also learn about living your best life (Who doesn’t want to do that!) and gaining confidence (Pretty sure we could all use more of that.).

This MasterClass is an easy listen and while I don’t think you’ll walk away automatically more authentic, it does leave you with exercises and the skills you can use. I did find this MasterClass to be a bit confused at times on exactly what the thesis was but overall it’s one I would recommend watching passively.

Who Is RuPaul

RuPaul is a famous drag queen, has been in more than 50 films and TV sitcoms, and runs RuPaul’s DragCon among many more accomplishments. He’s also a musician, model, and television judge. (Talk about busy!)

What RuPaul’s MasterClass Covers

In RuPaul’s MasterClass, you’ll learn more about moving on from pain and trauma, how to own the room, and how to apply makeup. This MasterClass is sort of all over the place but it’s got a little bit for everyone.

Class Length

This MasterClass is 16 lessons long, spanning a total of 2 hours and 1 minute in length. It’s a fairly short MasterClass that can easily be binged in an afternoon or two. I threw this on while I was doing chores and simple admin-related life tasks.

Course Materials

This class comes with a 42-page guidebook. This guidebook covers much of the same information from the video portion of the course but is still worth a flip through. It covers a lot of interesting information and history about drag beginning on page 25.

What We Liked

This class covers a lot of ground and keeps it interesting thanks to the instructor. RuPaul is pleasant to listen to and entertaining. I quite enjoyed this class and I feel that I did walk away with tools that can help me become more self-confident and live more authentically as I want to live.

What We Didn’t Like

I enjoyed this course but I also felt like it wasn’t sure what it wanted to be. I would have liked to have seen a course specifically on drag and performance from RuPaul and a separate one on authenticity and self-expression from a therapist or person who studies it. While I think it’s beneficial for RuPaul to talk about authenticity and self-expression from her own experiences, I have the same issue I did with Robin Arzon’s MasterClass. It’s a lot of ‘this is my personal story’ and not a lot of ‘this is factually proven to help based on this research’.

For example, Matthew Walker did the science of sleep and literally studies it for a living. It makes sense for him to teach about it. However, the question is, who then is qualified to teach authenticity? Is there a Ph.D. out there specifically studying self-confidence and authenticity?

How to Get the Most Out of This Class

I don’t think dividing this MasterClass into best and worst lessons is the right way to look at it. Instead, I’m going to divide it into areas of interest.

If you’re interested in authenticity, watch lessons 1 through 4.

If you’re interested in self-confidence, watch lessons 5 through 8.

If you’re interested in improving your confidence in appearance, watch lessons 9 and 10.

If you’re interested in drag, watch lessons 11 through 16.

Who Is This MasterClass Best For?

If you find you are lacking self-confidence or you just want to be more authentically you, then this is the MasterClass for you. You’ll learn all about being more authentic.

If you’re interested in drag this also provides the additional course portions that focus on makeup specifics for male faces.

Who Is This MasterClass Not For?

Everyone can be more confident and more authentic with themselves. Wait… there may be a few people who should reconsider their overconfidence. (But I suspect that’s due to a whole host of other internal problems.) Pretty much anyone can benefit from this MasterClass as it applies to all types of people. We all need to learn to be authentic with ourselves and overcome things that have harmed us in the past.

Similar MasterClasses You Might Like

If you like RuPaul’s MasterClass, you’ll likely enjoy the following:

  • The Power of Empathy
  • Robin Arzon – Mental Strength
  • Tan France – Style for Everyone
  • Bobbi Brown – Makeup and Beauty

Final Takeaway – 4/5

This is what I refer to as a ‘soft’ MasterClass. You won’t be learning about the scientific method or how to structure a novel but you’ll be learning about confidence, overcoming your past, and being yourself authentically (even if others hate it). This class won’t require you to sit down and take notes and is best consumed while folding laundry and doing other mindless chores.

I found RuPaul to be easy to listen to and the information he covered to be useful for those from all walks of life. I give this MasterClass a 4 out of 5. It’s definitely on my must-watch list but because it can be watched more passively I do think everyone should take the time to listen through it.
